Information seeking behaviors of environmental journalists

Journalists and librarians share a common goal of providing information to the public, yet very little is known about how journalists’ seeking behavior intersects with libraries. This case study seeks understand environmental journalists by investigating their needs intersect library changed over course 9-month fellowship at University Colorado Boulder. Semi-structured interviews were conducted seven beginning end fellowship, while an open coding approach was used identify themes. Generally, participants research (1) identifying story idea conducting preliminary search, (2) expanding knowledge on topic through scientific articles experts, (3) field research, (4) completing when redundant they are confident knowledge. process, growing feelings confidence as similar to, but not exactly, Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process model. Their interactions mostly limited accessing books articles. Overall, there change in participants’ behavior, possibly due time learn new resources, reliance preexisting habits, professional competence, lack awareness services (e.g. librarians, workshops, public academic access). An understanding can help conduct instruction outreach efforts that address needs.
